A woman is suing McDonald’s after a commercial allegedly compelled her to give in to temptation and bite into a juicy burger, breaking her fast.
Ksenia Ovchinnikova is suing the food chain after claiming that a cheeseburger ad made her break her fast during Lent. Prior to the cheesy incident, she had successfully fasted for 16 years during lent.
“When I saw an advertising banner — I could not help myself,” said Ovchinnikova, who is an orthodox Christian, per Russian state media.
According to the Daily Mail., after Ovchinnikova indulged she was filled with instant regret and decided to sue the food chain for $14 for breaching consumer protection law and insulting her religious beliefs.
As an Orthodox Christian, during Lent they must stay away from meat, meat by-products, poultry, eggs, and dairy for the entire time. Ovchinnikova Claims McDonald’s intentionally advertised meat products during their lent period.
“By this point, I had already been fasting for a month, but when I saw an advertising banner, I could not help myself, I visited McDonald’s and bought a cheeseburger,” Ksenia Ovchinnikova said in her statement. “In the actions of McDonald’s, I see a violation of the consumer protection law. I ask the court to investigate and, if a violation has taken place, to oblige McDonald’s LLC to compensate me for moral damage in the amount of one thousand rubles.”
A date for her preliminary hearing has not been set yet.
