Government To Seize R. Kelly Funds Held By Sony Music & UMPG To Pay Victims
Brooklyn prosecutors are seeking to garnish R. Kelly’s career earnings from Sony and Universal Music Publishing Group and the money they’re holding from R. Kelly’s music catalog in order to pay compensation he owes his victims.
The star still owes $140,900 in penalties and restitution to two abuse victims after being awarded half a million dollars.
“He currently owes $504,289.73, including interest,” the statement from the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York reads. “Interest is continuing to accrue.”
Kelly was convicted in 2021 in Brooklyn of racketeering and sex-trafficking charges. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Last September, he was found guilty in federal court in Chicago of coercing minors into criminal sexual activity and producing child pornography. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Those 20 years will run concurrently.
The government has already moved to seize nearly $28,000 from his commissary fund. The commissary funds were all donations from fans.
“Good. It’s not like he needs the money anyway. R. Kelly is getting free housing and meals right now,” someone commented on social media.
