Man Who Killed 23 People In El Paso Walmart Sentenced To 90 Consecutive Life Terms

The mass shooter who killed 23 people at an El Paso Walmart in one of the deadliest attacks targeting Latinos in modern US history was sentenced to 90 consecutive life terms by a federal judge on Friday.

Prosecutors had recommended Patrick Crusius, 24, receive consecutive life sentences for each of the 90 federal charges, including hate crimes and firearms offenses, to which he pleaded guilty.

The killer showed no emotion, staring straight ahead, as he was condemned – at least for now – to a life behind bars.

In a hearing lasting roughly 40 minutes, Crusius’ defense attorney delivered an allocution – a defendant’s formal address to the court – on behalf of the shooter.

Defense lawyer Joe Spencer told the court Crusius took responsibility for the harm he had caused and that his rampage was due to severe mental illness.

“Patrick will leave prison in a coffin. The only question is, will it be on God’s time or man’s time?” Spencer said.

Some survivors and relatives of victims wiped tears as Spencer spoke.
