Cardi B Defends Her Heritage: “My Grandparents Are Blacks”

Cardi B has been in lots of controversial topics so far this week, nevertheless, she also continued her winning streak at the just concluded BET Awards.

Cardi reacted to claims she’s not from the black heritage because she speaks Spanish. Cardi has insisted that she sees herself as black. During a recent Instagram Live session, Cardi chatted about her multi-cultural heritage and how people are often confused when she refers to herself as a black woman.

The Dominican rapper claims that people don’t understand the difference between race, nationality and ethnicity. According to Cardi, many of her fans race bait when it comes to her.

She’s become one of the most visible faces for Afro-Latinas and dominicanas in the mainstream. And she’s done it while remaining unapologetically unvarnished and proudly putting on for her culture.

Cardi’s upset that some people feel that she’s not Black, but she asserts that her features don’t come from white people.

She said “I’m not Mexican, bro. I’m not Mexican at all. First of all, I’m West Indian and I’m Dominican. I speak Spanish because I’m Dominican.” The person asked what’s the difference than being Mexican. “Everything.”

“People just don’t be understanding sh*t,” Cardi went on to say. “It’s like, ‘Oh, Cardi’s Latin, she’s not black.’ And it’s like, ‘Bro, my features don’t come from f*cking white people f*cking, okay?’ And they always wanna race-bait when it comes to me. That’s why I have Afro features. ‘Oh, but your parents are light-skinned, your parents are this.’ All right, but my grandparents aren’t.”
