The head of the largest New York Police Department union has publicly endorsed Donald Trump for president and Trump has also triumphantly accepted the endorsement..

“I cannot remember when we’ve ever endorsed for the president of the United States until now — that’s how important this is,” said Pat Lynch, the president of the New York City Police Benevolent Association.

Acccording to the New York Post, Lynch made the statement at an event with Trump in his Bedminster club Friday night. “We need your strong voice across the country.

“Mr. President, we’re fighting for our lives out there,” Lynch told Trump. “We don’t want this to spread to the rest of the country. We need your strong voice across the country to say ‘we have the support of law enforcement across this country.’”

The union did not endorse anyone in the 2016 presidential election but it seems now its decision to support Trump comes from his backing of law enforcement amid nationwide protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement as well as calls to end police brutality and social injustice.

“Mr. President, we’re fighting for our lives out there,” Lynch told Trump. “We don’t want this to spread to the rest of the country.

Trump then joyfully bragged about Lynch’s endorsement on Twitter. “Today, it was my great honor to proudly accept the endorsement of the @NYTCPBA!” Trump tweeted.

“I have deeply and profoundly admired the brave men and women of the #NYPD for my entire life. New York’s Finest are truly the best of the best I will NEVER let you down! #MAGA.”
