The United States military has officially exited out of Afghanistan as the last evacuation flight took off earlier today at Kabul International Airport.

Before its deadline, US military personnel managed to evacuate 79,000 people which included 6,000 Americans within the past two weeks after the Taliban regained control in Kabul.

“I’m here to announce the completion of our withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Tonight’s withdrawal signifies both the end of the military component of the evacuation but also the end of the nearly 20-year mission that began in Afghanistan shortly after September 11, 2001,” said General Kenneth McKenzie, commander of US Central Command.

According to Al Jazeera, McKenzie reportedly complimented the Taliban but he confirmed that the US government and Taliban did not team up together to discuss evacuation efforts and an exact timeline of when all troops were leaving.

“But he did say that the US did not coordinate at all with the Taliban in terms of the exact time and date that the last planes left the airport.”

President Joe Biden also said in a statement that the Taliban has made a commitment to ensure a safe transition out of Kabul and world leaders will hold them accountable.
