United Airlines Mandates COVID-19 Vaccines For All Employees — Those Who Do Not Comply Will Be “Fired”
United Airlines is becoming the first major airline to require workers to get vaccinated against Covid-19, joining the growing list of companies to mandate shots as the delta variant spreads nationwide.
According to the New York Times, a letter to employees was sent out Friday. CEO Scott Kirby and President Brett Hart said it is their duty to keep employees safe when at work, and with that said, the airline will be requiring all employees to provide proof they have been fully vaccinated by October 25 or five weeks after the Food and Drug Administration fully authorizes a vaccine.
Employees who choose not to do so by the deadline will be fired unless they are exempt for religious or health reasons, the news site notes. “We know some of you will disagree with this decision to require the vaccine for all United employees,” the airline said in an email to staff. “But, we have no greater responsibility to you and your colleagues than to ensure your safety when you’re at work, and the facts are crystal clear: everyone is safer when everyone is vaccinated.”
In addition to this, United is also offering an additional day of pay for most employees who provide proof of vaccination by mid-September, CNN reports. However, it was a noted that the pay does not apply to United pilots and flight attendants who already have a union-negotiated incentive to be vaccinated.
“Over the last 16 months, [CEO Scott Kirby] has sent dozens of condolences letters to the family members of United employees who have died from Covid-19. We’re determined to do everything we can to try to keep another United family from receiving that letter,” said the notice to United employees. “Together we’ll do our our part to defeat this virus.”
