Gabrielle Union Reveals She’s Battled PTSD For 30 Years After Being Sexually Abused At 19
Gabrielle Union has taken to Instagram to share a heartfelt message, opening up about her 30-year battle with PTSD and anxiety stemming from the time she was raped at 19.
The incident was said to have occurred while Gabrielle was working a night shift at a Payless store in 1991.
In her latest social media post, the former “Being Mary Jane” star shared a video clip of herself at the Met Gala, revealing that she gets excited when attending such events, but admits that her anxiety can often get the better of her and turn the feeling of elation into “pure agony.”

She said that there had been times in the past when her anxiety had taken such a toll on her mental health that it subsequently shrunk her life — to the point where leaving the house or making a left turn at an uncontrolled light could “fill me with terror.”
Gabrielle was adamant about not needing to be fixed for her disorder and stressed that others who are battling similar issues should never feel like they’re alone, with symptoms of both conditions often plaguing people for a lifetime.
“When we tell y’all what we are experiencing, please believe us the 1st time we mention it,” the 49-year-old wrote.
“No, it’s not like being nervous and everyone experiences and deals with anxiety differently, and that’s OK […] I share this as I hope everyone living with anxiety knows they aren’t alone or ‘being extra.’ I see you, I FEEL you and there is so much love for you. Always. Love and light good people. Be good to each other out there.”
