California Doctor Attempts To Raise $20M To Open A Floating Abortion Clinic Following The Overturn Of Roe V. Wade

A doctor from California is attempting to raise $20 million to carry out abortion clinics on the water in the Gulf of Mexico to aid women who live in states where abortions are now illegal, according to the New York Post.

A professor at the University of California San Francisco, Obstetrician Dr. Meg Autry, feels that having a ship that contains a clinic in federal waters will avoid state laws that ban the procedure.

The location of the ship hasn’t been concluded nor confirmed; however, it’ll be accessible to women who reside in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas, which are the states that have already made the act illegal following the overturn of Roe v. Wade.

According to Dr. Autry’s fundraising website, the clinic will serve as a “safe haven” for individuals who aren’t able to access the proper resources within their state. The clinic will also cost little to nothing.

“People that care deeply about access to reproductive rights know that we have to be innovative and creative in order for patients to be able to continue to have access…We know internationally that when access is limited or abortion is illegal, patients die,” said Dr. Autry.

The floating clinic is still in the fundraising phase, through a nonprofit organization called PRROWESS. Dr. Autry noted that the ship can take a year to prepare and it’ll cost over $20 million to get up and running; however, her team is working to finalize the details, including the location and how women can access the ship.

“We have to create options and be thoughtful and creative to help people in restrictive states get the health care they deserve,” Dr. Autry added.
