Dr. Phil Goes Against Cash Reparations For Black Descendants Of Slavery

Talk show host Dr Phil has no background in governmental police, nor in African American history – yet he’s offering his opinions on reparations. And just as you would have imagined, it’s not going well.

On Friday’s show Dr Phil discussed reparations with his guest William A. Darity Jr., a Duke University professor who co-authored From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century.

Darity said every Black descendant of slavery should receive $350,000 in reparations. But Dr. Phil said handing broke people that much money would be “an absolute disaster.” He also questioned whether the U.S. government could find $14 trillion to give reparations to that many Black Americans.

“I can tell you from a psychological perspective that if you take $350,000 or $840,000, and you write a check to any group of people, Black, white, poor, homeless, whatever, you give any group of people that much money and say, ‘There you go, best of luck,’ you come back in six months, they’re going to be broke. Whatever reparations are done, that would be an absolute disaster, as opposed to guidance and help in creating generational wealth, as opposed to income.”

Darity explained that only some of the folks receiving the cash would be irresponsible with their money.

Black activist Bob Woodson also shares what he thinks about black America and reparations. “When you go into slavery, it’s much more complex than white people were the oppressors and Black people were the victims,” Woodson says, adding that there were 3,700 free Blacks who owned 12,000 Black slaves. “Blacks really benefited more the first 100 years after slavery than we have in the last 50 years.”

Woodson says Americans must look beyond solutions saying that Blacks only benefit if whites lose. “We have to be defined more than just victims of oppression,” Woodson continues. “When whites were at their worst, Blacks were at their best.”
