Lil Nas X Spent Just $50 To Make Grammy Winning Hit Song ‘Old Town Road’

Old Town Road is a single by Lil Nas X , released on December 3, 2018 as the first extract from EP 7. Lil Nas X spent just $50 to make the viral hit song. He spent $30 to purchase the beat from producer YoungKio and $20 recording it at Atlanta studio CinCoYo.

With 18.4 million units sold globally, the song was the second best-selling song in 2019 according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

In February 2022 the single was certified 16 times platinum by the RIAA , becoming the song with the highest number of certifications in the United States. It also won two Grammys.

In Italy it was the 99th most played song on the radio in 2019. On April 5, 2019 Lil Nas X released a remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus in order to get the original song recognized as a country track: the success of the remix allowed the song to climb the Billboard Hot 100 up to reach the first position one week after the release of the remix and five after its entry into the chart.

The following week, it broke the record for most streams in one week, with 143 million streams in the United States. The record was previously held by Drake since July 2018.

On August 3, 2019 Old Town Roadit notched up 17 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, tying the records for most weeks atop the chart previously held by Mariah Carey and the Boyz II Men ‘s One Sweet Day and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee ‘s Despacito.

It left the top spot after 19 straight weeks, dethroned by Billie Eilish ‘s Bad Guy .
