Doctor Doesn’t Believe Errol Spence Jr. Can Perform At 100% In Boxing Ring

I’m sure we all tuned in this past weekend to see Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford take the ring. While Crawford took home the welterweight championship title, a doctor is alleging that Spence may not have been operating at 100%.

During an appearance on BDA Boxing Podcast, a doctor highlighted Spence‘s car accident in 2019 that could have taken his life.

His Ferrari flipped multiple times following a night out at a club. He was traveling at a high speed and was ejected from the vehicle due to not wearing a seatbelt. While he didn’t have any broken bones, he did suffer facial lacerations.

During the podcast, the Dr. Who opted to remain unnamed, stated that his wife thought Spence was high on Marijuana when he entered the ring for Saturday’s fight. “I’ve performed neurological exams on quite a few patients,” he explained. When you’re looking for someone who had head trauma and neurological damage, here’s certain things that you look for,” he continued.

“He has residual neurological damage from his car accident,” the doctor alleged. He went on to say that there is a glassy look to a person’s eyes when they have a concussion or advanced stages of dementia. The doctor said a quick comparison of Spence in old photos to how he appears now will show he’s significantly compromised.

The doctor said it’s not uncommon for teams to allow boxers to get into the ring and fight despite having underlying health issues. He noted Muhammad Ali was allowed to fight despite having Parkinson’s disease.

It has not been officially announced that Spence has any underlying issues stemming from the crash. However, this doctor believes that could be the case.
