Daddy Yankee Quits Reggaeton Music & Dedicates His Life To Christ

Reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee announced that he is walking away from making his trademark music to dedicate his life to the Lord.

“My people, this day for me is the most important day of my life. And I want to share it with you because living a life of success is not the same as living a life with purpose,” he wrote in Spanish on social media.

The rapper says that despite the wealth he has accrued, his faith in Christ helped fill the “emptiness that I felt for a long time.”

“What good will it be for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” he added, citing a Bible verse. “That is why tonight, I recognize, and I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him.”

Daddy Yankee is a Puerto Rican rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor who will be retiring after completing his final “La Meta” tour in December 2023. Dubbed the “King of Reggaeton”, he is often cited as an influence by other Hispanic urban performers.

Daddy Yankee is best known for global hits like “Gasolina” and “Despacito.” During his career, Daddy Yankee earned numerous accolades, including five Latin Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, 14 Billboard Latin Music Awards, two Latin American Music Awards, eight Lo Nuestro Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and six ASCAP Awards.

He also received a Puerto Rican Walk of Fame star, special awards by People en Español magazine, and the Presencia Latina at Harvard University. He was named by CNN as the “Most Influential Hispanic Artist” of 2009, and included in Time 100 in 2006.
