Musician Sues Mariah Carey For Stealing “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

Mariah Carey is allegedly being sued for apparently ripping off “All I Want For Christmas” by another artist who claims she was inspired by his song and used the same title.

Andy Stone is suing Mariah Carey for copyright infringement and claims he co-wrote and recorded a song titled “All I Want For Christmas Is You” years before Carey dropped her legendary holiday hit.

The lawsuit states Stone recorded the song in 1989 in Nashville, Tennessee, and claims the song was a hit at the time. The single even appeared on the Billboard chart in 1993 during the Christmas season as reported by TMZ.

However, Mariah Carey released her song in 1994 with an accompanying music video, and became one of her biggest singles to date. Stone further claimed that her team didn’t reach out to him for permission to use the title.

Carey and her songwriting partner Walter Afanasieff decided to write the song after her ex-husband Tommy Mottalo suggested she’d release a Christmas album for Sony Music Entertainment. There were some doubts about the idea since most artists do not release Christmas albums at the height of their careers.

“Back then, you didn’t have a lot of artists with Christmas albums. It wasn’t a known science at all back then, and there was nobody who did new, big Christmas songs. So we were going to release it as kind of an every day, ‘Hey, you know, we’re putting out a Christmas album. No big deal,” said Afanasieff.

She even decorated her home with Christmas ornaments to get a feel for the song and it was composed in 15 minutes in August 1994. Carey said “All I Want For Christmas reminded her of a 60’s retro vibe. Stone is reportedly asking for $20 million in damages. Carey’s team has yet to respond to the lawsuit.

Wow, I read the article. This man is suing her, bc he said she used the same title as his. Not bc she stole a melody or anything. This is a money grab! He’s pissed her song is overshadowing his song (w/ the same title).

This will be dismissed.
