Detroit Teacher Who Won ‘Teacher Of The Month’ Fired After Parents Discover Her Rap Career Outside Of School

A Detroit teacher is searching for answers after she was fired from her job simply because she’s an aspiring rapper in her free time. Dominique Brown was a U.S. History teacher at Taylor Preparatory High School in Detroit, MI when she won the prestige award of ‘Teacher of the Month’ just last December.

Then, a few months later, she got the unfortunate news that she had been fired because an anonymous parent complained about her being “unprofessional” due to her rap career that she has outside of school.

Brown, who has been teaching for 7 years, tells Fox 2 that the parent reached out to the school district all the way back in October 2023, a few months before she won the award, to report her for being a bad influence on the children because she was a rapper.

After the initial complaint, Brown says she went through 5 months of meetings to defend her hobby against the district. Despite the parent’s verbal complaint, Brown says she never received a formal complaint or met the parent in person before the suspicious firing.

“I was like hey well can we tell that parent to come in and see professionalism, see me in a classroom, see me after school, see me at all the games, see me dropping kids off everyday, buying food? Can they come see me in my element before they try to say I’m unprofessional in it? If I was a horrible teacher, y’all would have dropped me the day it was a problem,”

After her firing, Brown made a new music video called ‘Drippin 101’ which featured some ot her former students. In the comments, Brown continued to defend herself, saying, “My outside life should not be grounds for termination when it does not interfere with my ability to fulfill my responsibilities as a teacher. My dedication, professionalism, and passion for education have always been unwavering, regardless of any personal pursuits I may have.”

Brown tells Fox 2 that she plans to take legal action against the school for discrimination.
