UPDATE: 7.2-magnitude Earthquake In Haiti Left Over 1,400 People Dead And Tens Of Thousands Homeless
As of Monday, the death toll in Haiti rose above 1,400 with over 6,900 people injured following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the nation on Saturday.
Still, an unknown number of Haitians are reportedly still missing with tens of thousands left homeless as a result of the quake, The Hill reports. Haiti’s civil protection agency has taken to Twitter to encourage “good neighbors whose space has not been affected” to help those in need and people who have been displaced.
As the news site notes citing BBC, the heavy rains from Tropical Storm Grace has also hampered rescue workers’ attempts to work through the debris and rubble to find survivors. According to a Tuesday report by National Hurricane Center, Grace was upgraded from a tropical depression to a tropical storm and was located just west of the Haitian city Les Cayes before it continued to move west toward Jamaica.
As CNN notes, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said during an off-camera briefing on Monday that the US military’s Southern Command has been coordinating with inter-agency partners since Saturday to “assess the situation and provide support in the wake of the earthquake” in Haiti.
