California Teacher Placed On Leave After She Was Caught On Video Mocking Native Americans
A California teacher was placed on leave after she was recorded on video wearing a headdress and mocking Native Americans during a math lesson.
The Native American student who recorded the footage at North High School said he felt like “violence was being committed against him” and had the right to record when the woman started chanting “SohCahToa” while mocking cultural chants in a high-pitched voice.
Another clip shows the teacher standing on top of a desk continuing the chant as the students laugh at the trigonometry mnemonic lesson. In response to the video, the Riverside Unified School District said in a statement confirming she was placed on leave due to the backlash from social media.
“A recording of one of our teachers has been widely circulated on social media. These behaviors are completely unacceptable and an offensive depiction of the vast and expansive Native American cultures and practices.
“Her actions do not represent the values of our district. The teacher has been placed on leave while the district conducts an investigation. The Riverside Unified School District values diversity, equity, and inclusion, and does not condone behavior against these values,” it reads.
The district continued to say: “We are deeply committed to implementing inclusive practices and policies that honor the rich diversity of our district and the greater region. We will be working with our students, families, staff, and community to regain your trust.”
The school’s administrators did not release a statement in reference to the video or the teacher’s leave of absence.
