Winterville Charter Academy Under Fire After Teacher Tells Black Students They Would Be Her “Field Slaves”

A teacher has quit from a North Carolina charter school after her disturbing comments. The teacher expressed to her black students, if it wasn’t for the constitution they would be her “field slaves”. Parents are now speaking out stating that this isn’t the only racist incident that has taken place at the school.

“The school leadership team acted immediately upon learning about a racially insensitive lesson and student remarks, and is currently working to address ongoing concerns from parents that racially insensitive student remarks continue,” said Colleen Cullison, spokesperson for National Heritage Academy.

Cullison added that while privacy rules won’t allow  her to discuss details, “we will not tolerate racism in our school community and will continue taking swift action that addresses these issues.”

Winterville Charter Academy sent out a statement which refers to “racially insensitive words” being used by children in the class without any action from the teacher.

Kanisha Tillman, who son is an eighth-grader at the school, stated a parent shared her a text message saying a particular teacher treated all the black students different from the white students. Her son went more into detail.

A white student had called a Black student a monkey,” Tillman expressed to The Associated Press, as she relayed her son’s account.

“When the Black student educated him on that being racist and him not liking it and not to call him that and asked the teacher for support, the teacher turned around and said to him, ‘Oh, it’s OK. We’re all a little bit racist.’”
