Surgeon Who Branded Initials On Patients’ Livers Loses License

Dr. Simon Bramhall committed the act between February and August 2013 and was convicted for common assault in 2017. Bramhall reportedly used an argon beam coagulator to write his initials on the translated livers of patients at the end of their surgeries.

According to USA TODAY, Bramhall’s initials were discovered by another doctor who was performing surgery on a patient whose transplant had failed.

The patient reportedly suffered from mental health issues due to the media coverage and trauma from the incident.

Bramhall has pleaded guilty to the crimes and was sentenced to perform community service in addition to a fine of $13,000(£10,000).

Initially, his license was suspended for five months but the case was recently revised and officials from the General Medical Council removed his license from the medical registry. He is also suspended from performing medicine.

“This person has been suspended from the Medical Register and may not practice as a doctor in the UK.”

Bramhall was officially licensed as a doctor in August 1989 and practiced medicine for over 20 years prior to his suspension.
