An 80-year-old Ukrainian man has went viral on Twitter after a photo if him seemingly trying to join the army to fight for “for his grandkids.”

The widely surfaced photo, posted on social media by former Ukrainian first lady Kateryna Yushchenko Thursday night, exhibits the elderly man in a black cap addressing a Ukrainian soldier with a leather bag.

“Someone posted a photo of this 80-year-old who showed up to join the army, carrying with him a small case with 2 t-shirts, a pair of extra pants, a toothbrush and a few sandwiches for lunch,” Yushchenko wrote. “He said he was doing it for his grandkids.”

It’s not clear who took the photo, but the photo went viral on Friday after Russia began its massive attack on Ukraine that has taken the media by storm. 

Social media users applauded the grandfather’s bravery, one Twitter user shared, “No words can describe this man’s bravery, patriotism, and love. So sad, and so inspiring.




“My love for my grandchildren is all-encompassing, and I would do anything for them but I wouldn’t be brave enough to literally fight for them. This man’s sacrifice is overwhelming. 🇺🇦
