FDA Approves A Condom For Use During Anal Sex For The First Time

The Food and Drug Administration has authorized a condom brand for use during anal sex.

On Wednesday, the FDA announced that they are approving ONE male condom, generated by Global Protection Corp., the plan is to encourage individuals to use them during anal sex and protect against HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.

This authorization helps us accomplish our priority to advance health equity through the development of safe and effective products that meet the needs of diverse populations,” Dr. Courtney Lias, director of the FDA’s Office of GastroRenal, OB-GYN, General Hospital, and Urology Devices, said in a press release.

According to the FDA, the chance of sexually transmitted disease is “significantly higher” when participating in anal sex pertained to vaginal intercourse.

“The FDA’s authorization of a condom that is specifically indicated, evaluated and labeled for anal intercourse may improve the likelihood of condom use during anal intercourse,” Lias said.

The FDA explained that additional condom corporations can also provide their products for approval if they prove a “substantial equivalence” in their effectiveness.
