Hiker Killed After Attempting To Help Friend Who Fell Off Cliff

A hiker was killed and three of his friends are injured after falling off of a 300ft cliff in California.

The four friends were hiking Sunday evening around 11 pm near Paseo Del Mar when one of the women went to the side to relieve herself and slipped while peeing.

According to Vincent Avila, 25, he, his friend, Jerardo Huitzil, and another female friend attempted to help the woman but also slipped and fell over the edge. Avila said he reached out for help after managing to climb back up the cliff and chased down a police officer around 4:40 AM.

As reported by TOO FAB, Avila suffered minor injuries and he lost his phone plus a shoe during the fall. The Los Angeles Fire Department and Palos Verdes Estates Police helped rescue the two women who were later listed in critical condition after they were airlifted to a nearby hospital. Huitzul was pronounced dead at the scene during the rescue.

“Both of them told us there were hanging at the cliff’s edge. The female who we interviewed stated she slipped. And as she was starting to fall, her friends, all three of them, tried to save her. And in doing so, all four of them went over the cliff.” said Palos Verde Police Capt. Steve Barber.

Avila reportedly suffered a broken rib and internal damage to his kidneys in addition to deep cuts plus bruises to his legs and face. His mother Irma said in an interview that he sustained the injuries while climbing back up the cliff. She added that her son didn’t know that Huitzul passed away and assumed he was unconscious. Currently, Avila is recovering at Harbor UCLA Medical Center.

There are no street lights along the cliff so visitors and residents can see where the cliff begins and ends.
