Chicago Teenager Charged With Shooting U.S Marshall & His Police Dog

A police dog and his officer handler with the federal U.S. Marshall’s service both received a salute from members of the Chicago Police Department as the K-9 was led out of a veterinary hospital on Sunday afternoon.

The officer with the U.S. Marshals Service’s fugitive apprehension team and his federal police dog were both shot while serving an arrest warrant on Thursday.

Following the shooting, the federal marshal rushed the dog to a veterinary clinic, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. The marshal then realized he had been shot in his hand and an ambulance was called but the officer declined to be taken to a hospital, Langford On Friday, the U.S. Marshals Service said the police dog was in intensive care but was well enough by Sunday to be released. It is not clear if he will be returning to service.

A Chicago man was charged in the shootings on Saturday. Tarrion Johnson, 19, faces charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery with a firearm, aggravated cruelty to animals and injury to a police animal, the Chicago Police Department said. Johnson was denied bail during a bond court appearance over the weekend the department said.

Police said Johnson was arrested Thursday shortly after the shootings. Authorities at the time said two gunmen were arrested, but Chicago police did not say anything about the second person in announcing the charges against Johnson on Saturday

Police said a Chicago officer returned fire during the shooting but did not strike anyone. Chicago police said their officers and U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force were serving a Chicago PD arrest warrant for Johnson for an attempted murder.
