Missouri Man Charged For Shooting & Killing His Neighbor After 10-Year Beef Over Lawn Mowing

A Missouri man is behind bars after killing his neighbor over lawn mowing. According to reports, the two neighbors had hostility towards each other for 10 years before the fatal shooting.

Samuel Avery and Warner Trotter argued for nearly 10 years over lawn mowing. This might seem minor to us, but to Trotter, Avery always mowed his yard too loudly in the morning for his liking. Before this incident, the police had to be called to their houses twice due to their on-going resentment towards each other.

According to court documents, on the day of the shooting, Trotter complained that Avery’s lawn mower was too loud and made a gesture with his hand that he would shoot Avery. Avery said he called the police and was told nothing could be done.

Trotter then waved an actual gun around and said nothing would happen to him. Hours later, Trotter and a woman came back home from getting food. The woman told police she was inside the house when she heard Trotter ask Avery, “Do you have something to say?” Then she heard several shots. Avery had shot Trotter in the head on his porch. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Avery called the police immediately and informed them he had shot Trotter. He was arrested without incident. When questioned by police, Avery said he shot Trotter because he reached for his gun first. Footage from security cameras at Trotter’s home shows him saying something to Avery, then starting to enter the house when Avery fired at Trotter several times.

The video clearly shows Trotter did not reach for his weapon at any time. Trotter’s gun was still found at his waist when paramedics arrived at the house.

Avery is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. His bond was set at $100,000, with conditions that he be on house arrest with a drug and alcohol dependency program. He was also ordered to wear a tracking device and not to possess or be around any weapons.
