Alabama School Installs Bulletproof Safe Room Inside 2 Classrooms To Protect Students From Mass Shooting
An Alabama elementary school has debuted two rapid-deploy bulletproof safe rooms to help protect students from mass shootings, according to the Daily Mail.
West Elementary School in Cullman installed the $60,000 bulletproof rooms inside two classrooms, the first ever in the US.
The ballistic wall is designed to act as a whiteboard when it is not deployed, laying flat against the walls. However, during mass shootings or severe weather, the shield can be pulled from wall within 10 seconds. It is equipped with a handle-less door, to protect students from a shooter entering the small saferoom from the outside, and it abled to be locked from within.

The original product was designed as ballistic shelters for the military, but after the Uvalde shooting in Texas – where 19 children and two teachers were shot dead by Salvador Ramos, 18 – Kevin Thomas and his company KT Security Solutions shifted the focus toward schoolchildren.
‘I don’t want it to be here, it’s crazy, but somebody’s got to do it,’ Thomas, told ABC 33/40.
The space offers protection up to Level 3 of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) armor protect level. An NIJ Level 3 can stop a rifle bullet. There is only one level above it, Level 4, which can stop a steel core armor from a piercing rifle. according to NIJ.
Alabama has had 42 school shootings since 1970, according to World Population Review. And the state has reported the biggest increase in threats, fights, guns, and drugs since the 2021-22 school year, according to the Alabama Education Lab.
