Manatee Dies After Sexual Intercourse With His Brother, Suffered A 14.5CM Long Tear Inside The Colon

A manatee has recently died unexpectedly after engaging in sexual intercourse with its brother. Yes, you read that correctly.

According to NBC News, 38-year old Hugh, the manatee, passed away a couple of months ago at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Florida from engaging in sex with his brother, Buffett.

While the aquarium keepers knew the act was going on, they didn’t interfere to stop it out of fear it would cause more harm than good. This act is not uncommon for male manatees to engage in sexual intercourse with one another even if they are brothers.

In a statement, the Mote Aquarium said, “On the day of Hugh’s passing, Hugh and Buffett engaged in natural, yet increased, mating behavior observed and documented in manatees both in managed care and in the wild. This was the first time such heightened mating behavior was witnessed between the two manatees.”

When the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Marine Mammal Pathobiology Lab performed a necropsy procedure on Hugh, they found a “14.5 cm long tear in the ventral wall” of his colon.

An assistant professor at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Jenessa Gjeltema, spoke in detail about the sexual nature of manatees, saying, “They’re not too meticulous about who their partners are. They just have this kind of a sexual urge, and then they’ll engage in activity with whomever seems to be in the area, and if that’s a female, great.”

Jenessa continued, “But if there are not enough females around or there are only males around, they may express that sexual behavior on whatever individual may be in the vicinity.”
