Woman Bites Rabid Fox To Escape Vicious Attack

A woman in Bedford, Virginia is recovering after a rabid fox attack left her with 11 stitches, cuts all over her ankle and fingers and a wild story to tell.

On Saturday morning, Shirley Phillips was cleaning out her car where she lives on Elm Street in the town of Bedford.

Everything was normal until she felt something soft brush up against her leg. At first, she assumed it was the neighbor’s cat. Instead, it was a rabid fox.

“I looked back, and I was like, ‘That ain’t no cat!'” she recalled with a laugh.

The animal latched onto her ankle, teeth biting deep and leaving wounds that later required stitches at the hospital. She stepped back from the car, and somehow the fox caught ahold of her finger next. When she realized the fox was refusing to let go, she decided to switch tactics and literally bite back.

“I reached and grabbed him like [you would] grab a cat behind his neck, and I bit him on the ear,” Phillips said.

At that point, the fox was starting to relinquish its toothy grip on her hand a little bit. Phillips said she was backing up to the car again at that point. The door to her car was still open from her interrupted cleaning session, so she set him inside to make her next move.
