NYC Experiencing Life Threatening Flooding With Record Rain Falling For Just Three Hours
The concrete jungle is a soaking wet one today as torrential floodwater thrashed the nation’s most populous city on Friday morning.
Overwhelming amounts of rain caused a surge of floodwater to invade New York City, affecting schools, subways, basements, and vehicles.
CNN reported that a month’s worth of rain fell in Brooklyn in just three hours and John F. Kennedy International Airport experienced nearly 8 inches of rain – more than any other day since 1948. NYFD performed rescues at six flooded NYC basements thus far.

150 of 1,400 NYC schools have been affected by floodwater, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported. Subway lines experienced “major disruptions”, as water could even be seen bursting through infrastructure.
3 to 6 inches of rain have fallen across the Big Apple by the afternoon and more rain is expected through the evening.
New York City’s Chief Climate Officer Rohit Aggarwala explained the cause of the flash flooding to be a result of climate change. Scientists say that due to the warmer atmosphere, more water vapor will be able to be absorbed and gush back onto land intensely.
“The sad reality is our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure can respond,” said Aggarwala. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency and is urging residents to stay indoors as this storm is not expected to pass until late Saturday night.
