Tennessee Inmate Escapes Into Snowstorm & Asks To Be Let Back Into Prison An Hour After Because It Was Too Cold

An escaped inmate had second thoughts once he got outside and began trudging through the snow — in subfreezing temperatures.

Tennessee officials said Demarkus Davis, 20, turned himself over to police on Sunday night — just 45 minutes after escaping from a patrol car bound for the Shelby County Jail, local news outlets ABC 24 and Action News 5 reported.

Memphis Police had been alerted earlier to a prisoner who had escaped a car at the intersection of North Danny Thomas Boulevard and Washington Avenue.

Police then issued a department-wide broadcast including Davis’ description.

Davis, charged with two counts of child rape based on allegations dating back to 2022, allegedly flagged down a bystander, and asked them to call the police so he could turn himself in.

It was snowing in Memphis when a still-handcuffed Davis took off. The average temperature at the time was 13 degrees.

Davis has been charged with one count of escape following Sunday’s bid for freedom.
