Usher Says It Broke His Heart When Chilli Declined His Marriage Proposal

Usher is spilling the tea about his former relationship with singer Chilli of “TLC.” In an exclusive interview with People Magazine Usher revealed that their breakup broke his heart.

Usher says he’s always had a thing for “older ladies” and was a huge fan of Chilli’s and was excited to meet her. Chilli is seven years older than Usher but that didn’t stop the two from hitting it off.

“At the age of 8, I put her poster on my wall and said, ‘Man that girl is so beautiful. One day I’m going to meet her,’” Usher explained. However, Usher says things went left.

“I was a young man, and she had very specific rules that didn’t work for me,” he says. “We were missing each other. I really did want to have a different type of relationship where she was there with me, and she couldn’t be. She didn’t believe that I was actually in love with her as much as I was.”

“I wanted to marry her. I proposed and she told me no. I went through a great deal of pain after that, not trusting women or wanting to open up.” He admits, “I hurt her too,” but the situation “broke my heart.”

The two dated from 2001 to 2004. Chilli previously stated that despite the breakup, their romance continued off-and-on for years. Usher recently married his longtime girlfriend Jenn Goicoechea on Super Bowl Sunday.
