A resurfaced interview of South African superstar Tyla, is currently making rounds online. In the video, the Grammy Award winning singer says she looks up to Rihanna and hopes to be better than her one day.

“I look up to Rihanna, she’s done an amazing Job… and I hope to.. one day be on that level and even bigger.. because I really believe, I really believe,” Tyla said in the resurfaced interview.

The clip was reposted by The Neighborhood Talk and it’s been garnering mixed reactions from fans. “Why you gotta be extra saying BIGGER THAN Rihanna we only know water,” someone commented. “What’s wrong with her wanting to be successful like Rihanna and then some?” another person argued.

“She should feel that way. Idk why anyone would want to be less than the best,” someone else added. “What’s wrong with being confident? She didn’t say anything wrong. She admires her,” a fourth person penned in support of Tyla and a fifth user joked saying, “If it was Nicki, she would have started beef over this.”

Tyla full name Tyla Laura Seethal, was born and raised in Johannesburg, the singer signed with Epic Records in 2021 after the domestic success of her debut single, “Getting Late” featuring Kooldrink which was released in 2019.

She rose to international fame with the release of her 2023 viral hit “Water”, which broke into the top ten in sixteen countries including the United Kingdom and United States.

“Water” was the first song by a South African soloist to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years and was awarded the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024. The 22-year-old’s self-titled debut album was released on 22 March 2024. She has also earned nominations for a BRIT Award, a Soul Train Music Award, a MOBO Award, and two South African Music Awards.
