Black Man Receives World's First Genetically-Edited Pig Kidney Transplant: "He Is Recovering Well"
Black Man Receives World’s First Genetically-Edited Pig Kidney Transplant: “He Is Recovering Well”

History has been made after a black man becomes the world’s first living recipient of a genetically edited pig kidney transplant.

According to CNN, Rick Slayman was discharged from the hospital two weeks after his operation, “He is recovering well and will continue to recuperate at home with his family,” Massachusetts General Hospital said in a statement.

Slaman says this is the healthiest he’s felt in a long time. “This moment – leaving the hospital today with one of the cleanest bills of health I’ve had in a long time – is one I wished would come for many years. Now, it’s a reality and one of the happiest moments of my life.”

62-year-old Slayman says doctors suggested the pig’s kidney after he was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease last year. He is the third person to receive a pig transplant. The two others were heart transplants but the patients died weeks after the surgery.

Per the report, “the kidney was producing urine, the way kidneys should. They also used a genetically engineered pig to reduce the odds that the human immune system would reject the organ.

The news was posted by TNT and has since been garnering reactions in the comments section. “They love playing with us and yall love letting em,” someone commented. “I watched a show on Netflix & the doctor was doing something like this. EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS NO LONGER LIVING,” another person wrote.

“Y’all in the comments talkin bout “of course it’s a black man, of course they use us as test dummies” um HELLO??? He literally had to volunteer himself? How slow are yall??” someone else penned. “He gon be oinking by next week,” another user added.
