The first line of the song “Shake yo Nay Nay” by Milwaukee rappers Marry Mac and Shawn P. is “If I see a Kia, then I’m takin your shit,” which explains the situation of things in the community and the type of song young folks are digesting.

The song has amassed over 870,000 listens on Spotify and 670,000 on YouTube, it’s one of dozens of songs celebrating the act of stealing Kia and Hyundai cars that can be found on a variety of streaming playlists — often under the category “Kia Boys.”

A majority of Kia Boys are young Black males living in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods like Columbus’ South Linden community. And TikTok, in particular, has served as an accelerant.

The group of car thieves popularly known as “Kia Boys” are now going viral after revealing that they often sell their stolen Kia card for $50 to $100 each. The revelation has since caused outrage online, with many people sharing their thoughts.

“So they’re just doing it for fun basically,” someone commented. “Bros making minimum wage stealing Kias.. These niggas would’ve been perfect for Ray Ray & og Bobby Johnson,” another person wrote.

“Not them risking they freedom for money they couldnt even bond them out of jail, hell 100$ prolly enough for a pair socks & noodles in jail,” someone else shared. “Them boys jus wanna get high & you better off sellin weed,” another user added.

Car thefts by teens have exploded, fed by security flaws in Kias and Hyundais that make them easy to steal. In 2022, 82 Kias and Hyundais were stolen in all of Onondaga County. By 2023, it was more than 900. Total car thefts in the county nearly doubled, from 991 to 1,774.

Kias and Hyundais alone are responsible for the spike in thefts. Without them, the car thefts in the county actually fell 4%.

The magnitude of the thefts is stunning, but the thing that’s jawdropping is that the average age of nearly half of the car thieves who have been arrested. It is 15. Kids not old enough to drive are the ones behind the explosion. They steal the cars because they can, because it’s cool, because it’s a way to get girls. They get a car, use it until it’s hot, then dump it and get another one, police and others said.
