Jury Awarded $30 Million To Mother Whose 6-Year-Old Son Was Beaten To Death By Former LAUSD Employee

the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) awarded a substantial amount of money to the mother of a 6-year old boy who was beaten to death by a former school employee back in 2019.

According to ABC 7, Tyler D’Shaun Martin killed Dayvon Taylor the day after Christmas. A jury ruled this month that the school district was primarily at fault and awarded $30 million to Dayvon’s mother, Kenya Taylor. Tyler worked at Normandie Avenue Elementary School as an after-school program coach.

Davon’s mom said Tyler was beloved by the children at the elementary school where her son was a first-grader, and she trusted him enough to take Dayvon to movies and on play dates with other children. The two grew so close that she made him the boy’s godfather.

When he was arrested and charged,, prosecutors said Dayvon was over at Tyler’s house under his care during the holiday break. This is when Tyler brutally beat the young boy.

“He, for some reason or another punched him in the chest with a closed fist some 10 to 13 times, and the blunt force trauma that he received from that attack resulted in his death,” said Steve Vartazarian, the family’s attorney.

Kenya left her son with Tyler the day he was attacked because she was moving into her house in Long Beach. Tyler was ultimately charged with murder and assault on a child causing death. Following his death, Kenya hit the Los Angeles Unified School District with a lawsuit, ‘accusing the district of negligently hiring Tyler.’

“We hope that this verdict sends a message to LAUSD, and that message is: When we drop off our kids at your schools and drive away… and leave them there, we trust that they’re going to be safe,” Vartazarian said.
