Halle Berry Apologizes Over Trans Man Film Role Following Backlash
Halle Berry Backs Out Of Transgender Man Movie Role After Backlash
Yesterday, Halle Berry spoke on her upcoming portrayal of a trans man in a movie. [It’s] a character where the woman is a trans character, so she’s a woman that transitioned into a man. She’s a character in a project I love that I might be doing,” she said.
“It’s really important to me to tell stories, and that’s a woman, that’s a female story – it changes to a man, but I want to understand the why and how of that. I want to get into it,” she continued.
But it didn’t take long before she was dragged for her choice of words, the pronouns and descriptors Halle Berry used in describing the character as “she,” “it,” and “female.” The LGBT community weren’t also impressed with Halle taking the role when there are real transgender men looking for a movie role.
Hey @halleberry! 👋🏼
Assuming trans people didn’t need authentic media representation and weren’t killed because people think we’re “dressing up” like who we actually are…
if you were going to even *consider* playing a trans man, why the fuck would you misgender HIM? 🤦🏼♀️ pic.twitter.com/4x4b6CMHni

The Oscar winning actress has since responded to the backlash on Twitter. “I’d like to apologize for those remarks,” she wrote. “As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the trangender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories.”
The 52 year old added, “I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”
