Suicide Bomber Attacks Kabul Airport — Several People Dead

This Thursday, an apparent suicide bomb attack outside Kabul airport rocked the frantic final stages of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby tweeted, “We can confirm that the explosion near the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport has resulted in an unknown number of casualties. We will continue to update.”

According to various reports attributed to a Taliban official, 13 people have been killed, including children, in the suicide blast at the airport. It was said that there was also a second explosion reported at a hotel nearby.

Initial reports state that US personnel are among the wounded in the explosion according to three US officials and a source familiar with the situation. One official said Afghans had also been injured.

While it was immediately unclear who or what was behind the incident, two U.S. intelligence officials said the assumption is that the suspected IED attack was caused by the Islamic State group’s Afghan affiliate, ISIS-K.

This latest incident throws evacuation efforts into more turmoil days before President Joe Biden’s deadline for all U.S. forces to withdraw from the country. So far, Biden has briefed on the blasts.
