Chinese Man Attempted To End His Life Cause His Son Is Still Single

A father reportedly collapsed at a train station after he attempted to end his life because he was ashamed of his son’s dating life in China.

The 55-year-old man fainted after giving a note to security guards at the Shanghai Rail Station last week and said he overdosed on medication.

Officials said the note was addressed to his son and called his life shameful because the 29-year-old was still single. “People of my age in the village all have children and grandchildren already. But you are 29 and have achieved nothing,” the note reads.

According to Insider, the man is reportedly doing well after receiving treatment at a local hospital but the incident has sparked debate on social media.

Weibo users debated about the country’s societal expectations since young adults are expected to be married and have children by a certain age

“Marriage has also been an important marker of social maturation and personal success,” said National University of Singapore sociology expert Mu Zheng.

“Given China’s high housing prices and the expectations for men to assume the majority of costs in a household, transitioning to marriage indicates that the man is socially and financially ready.”
