Black Father Refuses To Take Daughter To See ‘Barbie’ Because The Trailer Was ‘Overwhelmed With Whiteness’
Black Professor Refuses To Take Daughter To See ‘Barbie’ Because The Trailer Was Full Of White People
Word about a black professor denying his daughter’s request to see the new hit movie “Barbie” is beginning to spread— the father claims the reason he refused to take his daughter to see the movie is because the trailer was “overwhelming”.
According to the Daily Mail, Dwight Watkins, initially told his daughter that he would watch the trailer first as the movie is rated PG-13. After watching, Watkins shut the idea down, explaining that he’d become overwhelmed with “whiteness”.
Watkins seemingly turned a no into an opportunity to reflect on the unfairness in America’s history. ‘It’s wild that the first Barbie doll dropped in 1959,” Watkins said. “And even though Black people were everywhere, we didn’t get a Black version until two decades later.”

Watkins went on to explain that he wants to watch what his daughter is observing as she’s getting older. “And no, I’m not that guy; I genuinely believe that artists and filmmakers can create whatever they want,” he said.
“But I must be cautious of what I expose my daughter to”. Furthermore, Watkins defended his image. “No, we are not teaching her to only connect with Black art; it’s just that everything white is always available and at the forefront of everything,” he said.
“You don’t have to search for white content; it’s already in your face.’
Although the ‘Barbie’ movie won’t be seen by Watkin’s daughter anytime soon, he concluded that he will continue to fixate his parental focus on teaching his daughter that black is beautiful and the ideology of ‘white is always right’ will not discourage his daughter from her connection to black art.
