72-Year-Old Black Woman Sentenced To 6 Months In Jail After Jury Found Her Guilty Of Assaulting White Co-Worker With An Aerosol Can

A judge down in Minnesota sentenced a 72-year-old Black woman to 6 months in jail after a jury found her guilty of assaulting of a white co-worker.

According to Insider, the woman, Sybil Garbow, was working as a licensed practical nurse at Touchstone Mental Health in Fridley, when tensions between her and a nurse named Devlin Stitt reached a boiling point.

Sybil claims she was cleaning a desk in an office with a can of aerosol spray when Devlin, who apparently thought Sybil was intentionally spraying her, pushed her in the chest. Sybil said she reached with her left hand for the phone to get help, and claims Devlin took the phone and hit her in the hand.

From there, Sybil said she hit Delvin on the head with the aerosol can and ran out of the room.

“I left, because I was scared, ’cause Daunte Wright had just got killed. George Floyd had just got killed. And I just had a confrontation, an altercation with a white woman,” Garbow said. “I thought, ‘I’m not letting the police take me nowhere. I’ll go and turn myself in.'”

Sybil said she told her colleagues to call 911 for Delvin, who had a cut on her head. She said she left the office for a friend’s house, who later took her to the police station. Anoka County prosecutors charged Sybil with first-, second-, and third-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

In May, the jury found her guilty of second-degree assault. Now, Sybil is preparing herself for jail after being sentenced her to six months followed by five years of probation. She also ended up losing her nursing job and says she’ll struggle to pay the $50,000 in restitution she was hit with.
