Florida Student Makes 911 Call About Fake Active School Shooter So He Could Go Home Early

An 11-year-old boy is about to have a long winter break and new year after claiming there was an active school shooter just so he could go home early.

The male student was arrested for a false report of a mass shooting, using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony, disruption of a school function, and misuse of a 911 emergency system.

According to WFLA, the incident occurred around 9:39 a.m. on Dec. 5 when the student contacted authorities to report an active shooter at Horizon Academy. “Help me. A shooter is walking through the hallways,” the boy told the dispatcher in the 911 call released by the sheriff’s department.

“He’s coming, he’s coming,” he continued. The school was placed on lockdown, although the School Resource Officer never reported hearing about a shooter.

Multiple agencies searched the school to find no apparent threats and learned that the boy made the report to simply go home early. He told a friend of his plan and went for it when the friend left his phone unattended.

“All of this was a prank,” Sheriff Woods told the outlet. “This student put fear into his fellow students, staff, and parents. For what? A prank? Because you wanted to go home? I will not tolerate my young citizens being fearful of going to school because you wanted to be a ‘jokester’ in hopes of going home.”

Woods continued, “The law requires that any person who makes these types of false reports pay restitution for the cost of the law enforcement response, which, in this case, will equal hundreds upon hundreds of man-hours. This young man is going to need to mow a lot of lawns to pay that bill.”
