17-Year-Old Indiana Teen Arrested For Selling Switches While In Home Detention

Greenfield police have arrested a 17-year-old boy they say sold handgun “switches” on the city’s west side while already on home detention for other gun charges.

Greenfield Police Department officers arrested the teen Tuesday at his home in the city’s Saw Mill neighborhood. GPD said in a release Wednesday that detectives began investigating the teen, who was not identified, after getting a tip that he was selling handgun switches.

Late Tuesday afternoon detectives were surveilling the teen’s home and reportedly saw a “hand-to-hand exchange” between the suspect and someone inside a car. The car was then pulled over and a “switch” was found inside, GPD said.

“For juveniles to have these, it’s very scary,” said Greenfield Police Chief Brian Hartman. “The problem nowadays is, it’s not too uncommon.”

During the search, GPD said detectives found three illegal handguns, illegal narcotics, and several switches that convert Glock handguns into fully automatic machine guns. Chief Hartman told FOX59/CBS4 that machine gun conversion devices are becoming increasingly easy to access, which is leading to major safety issues.

“They can be made on 3D printers,” he described. “They can be purchased online on the dark web from overseas and directly shipped to your house.”

Though easily accessible, the devices are illegal both on the state and federal levels.
