Some Residents In Atlanta Got A Letter From The IRS Stating That They Had To Verify Their Identity In Person To Receive Their Refund

A large group of people stood outside Atlanta’s Tax Assistance Center Saturday morning, waiting for the chance to speak with a representative after getting a letter in the mail stating that they had to verify their identity in person.

The IRS held an event over the weekend to help combat the rush of people before Mondays tax deadline. The event allowed those who came to speak with IRS agents on site.

‘People were camped out in lawn chairs as early as 6 a.m. ahead of the 9 a.m. event — and many told Atlanta News First that they didn’t come by choice. A majority of the people in line had received an email or letter from the IRS stating they had to verify their identity in person. The notification went on to say their refund was being held until they did so.’

Y’all already know once them people saw that their refund was being held….it was up from there. Others were told to come back in a month after waiting for hours in the long lines.

The IRS said they were going to hold the event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but tensions quickly rose after the doors closed hours before the scheduled stopping point.

They also plans to add additional staff to help with the influx of calls and have set another event for May 18th. It seems the issue wasn’t just in Atlanta. Folks down in Texas voiced their frustrations as well.

“To be depending on taxes sad idc what y’all say!! As blacks we need to elevate,” someone commented. “Noticed anything funny or NOT FUNNY about this clip. You only see ONE COLOR OF PEOPLE IN LINE. No white folk, Asian, Puerto Rican, just black folk. Coincidence, I think NOT!” another person noted.

“When they want their money, they will harass you. When we want ours, they take their time. I don’t blame them folks,” someone else shared. “I filed my taxes in February. They told me I had to wait up to 60 days while they review it further. the IRS playing around with our money but they don’t play about they money,” another user added.
